San Antonio Sports named Dr. Susan C. Blackwood as its executive director in 1996.
Her solid experience in sports management, and her connections across the country with businesses, national governing bodies, the NCAA, and the United States Olympic Committee, strengthens San Antonio Sports’ efforts to attract events and raise funds.
San Antonio Sports bids on and hosts major amateur sporting events for San Antonio. Its mission is to transform our community through the power of sport. Since 1991, the nonprofit organization has been responsible for attracting events which have resulted in over $320 million in direct economic impact and millions of dollars in national and international media exposure. San Antonio Sports also develops and supports sports and fitness programs for San Antonians of all ages, especially underserved youth. Its youth initiatives touch the lives of more than 160,000 children each year. Additionally, San Antonio Sports advocates for the development of quality athletic facilities in all quadrants of the community.
Before joining San Antonio Sports, Blackwood served as director of athletic relations for Oshman’s Sporting Goods, where she built relationships with leagues, coaches and sports governing bodies. Her expertise in sports management was developed during her association with the University of Texas as associate director of athletics from 1990-1994, and as assistant commissioner of the Southwest Athletic Conference form 1988 to 1990.
Her prior experience includes the administration of state high school athletics as assistant athletics director for the University Interscholastic League from 1981 to 1988 and the Nebraska School Activities Association from 1976-1980.
A native of Nebraska, Blackwood attended the University of Nebraska and received her educational doctorate in 1984 with a concentration in sports administration.
